Winter Eye Health

Winter can worsen dry, irritated eyes, stay hydrated, use a humidifier, blink regularly and apply preservative-free lubricating drops as needed. Protect eyes from cold wind and glare with wraparound sunglasses, warm compresses for lids to prevent blepharitis, and maintain strict hand and lens hygiene to reduce infection risk. Winter Eye Health is an issue. If irritation or vision changes persist, see your optometrist.

Winter sun
Wear UV-blocking, wraparound sunglasses to reduce glare from low-angle sun and reflective surfaces (snow, wet roads).
Use a brimmed hat for extra protection.
Dry eyes
Use preservative-free lubricating drops as needed; stay well hydrated.
Run a humidifier indoors and avoid direct air from heaters or vents.
Warm compresses and lid hygiene can help if you have blepharitis or meibomian gland issues.
Winter lighting
Use even, adjustable task lighting to reduce contrast between screen and surroundings.
Avoid overly bright or flickering lights; choose warmer colour temperatures in the evening to support sleep.
Increased screen time & the 20-20-20 rule
Every 20 minutes, look at something ~20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to reduce eye strain.
Schedule regular short breaks to stand, stretch and refocus.
Minimise reflections & glare
Position screens perpendicular to windows and light sources; use blinds or curtains.
Use anti-glare/ matte screen protectors and adjust screen brightness to match ambient light.
Blink often & behavioural tips
Consciously blink fully and frequently, especially during prolonged device use.
Use reminder apps or alarms, adjust font size/contrast for comfort, and maintain proper screen distance and posture.
If symptoms persist (redness, pain, vision changes), see your optometrist.
